Penalties for OWI
Michigan has many drunk driving charges, including:
- Operating under the influence of liquor (OUIL)
- Operating while intoxicated (OWI)
- Unlawful blood alcohol level (UBAL)
- Operating while visibly impaired (OWVI)
We can handle defense for any of these charges as well as charges for refusing the Breathalyzer test.
If you are convicted of OWI, your license will be suspended for 30 days, but after that period, you may be able to get a restricted license to drive to work, school, community service or treatment. We can represent you at the Driver Assessment and Appeal Division (DAAD) hearing.
Additional penalties for a first OWI conviction may include a fine up to $500, up to 93 days in jail, up to 360 hours of community service and a $1,000 driver responsibility fee for two years. You will also have six points added to your driver's license.
The penalties for subsequent OWI convictions are much more severe. You could go to prison, lose your license for more than five years, pay significant fines and be denied registration.
