Lucas County Spousal Abuse Lawyer Fighting for Your Rights
When anger and frustration escalate, a seemingly normal disagreement can spin out of control. If the cops are called — by either party or by a neighbor — it is likely that one of the parties will be arrested.
According to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, in 2009 nearly 70,000 domestic dispute calls were made throughout Ohio. More than half of these cases resulted in domestic violence charges or related criminal charges.
At Strong Law, we protect your rights. If you have been arrested, call 419-885-8877 or contact us online for a free consultation with Toledo domestic violence lawyer Dennis Strong. At Strong Law, we handle domestic violence cases involving allegations of:
- Spousal abuse
- Child abuse
- Sexual assault
- Stalking
- Verbal or physical abuse
- Other domestic abuse
In Ohio, domestic violence charges can be pursued when such conduct occurs between spouses, household family members, roommates, romantic partners, same-sex partners and certain other individuals.
What to Expect After a Domestic Violence Arrest
Domestic violence arrests often involve people who have never been involved with law enforcement before. If you have been arrested and charged with domestic violence, we can help you understand what to expect, things you can do to preserve your interests and represent you throughout the process.
- Injuries: Were there any injuries? Is the accuser alleging injuries? Serious bodily injuries can dramatically enhance the charges against you. Therefore, it is important to take pictures of any injuries — or lack of injuries — in order to ensure the prosecution does not seek unfair or more severe charges.
- Restraining orders: If you have been issued a temporary restraining order, you are entitled to a hearing on the restraining order within 14 days. This hearing is your only opportunity to challenge the restraining order. Without experienced legal counsel, the judge could order a permanent order, which could last up to five years.
- Consequences: In addition to potential jail time, probation and other criminal penalties, if convicted, you will have a permanent criminal record, and will be prohibited from owning or possessing any form of weapon, including handguns, hunting equipment or collectors' weapons. Additionally, depending on the protected parties named in the restraining order, you may face an additional civil case regarding your rights with your children.
At Strong Law, we understand what stakes you are up against. We use more than 30 years of experience and a thorough knowledge of the law in order to prepare your defense strategy. We work diligently to protect your rights and avoid or minimize the collateral consequences of a domestic violence arrest.
